handicaps and net score formula

We use hole-by-hole net Stableford. We are capping the max number of handicap strokes given at 10 strokes. Your team's handicap strokes are applied to the 10 (or less) hardest holes on the course based on our custom stroke index. On those holes, your score is reduced by 1 before Stableford points are calculated. If this sounds complicated to you, don't overthink, sign up, play your best, our app will take care of the scoring!

Stroke applied → Net score per hole → Stableford points

On a stroke hole, your physical score drops by 1 before points are awarded. All 18 holes are summed for your net weekly total.

Quick Example

Your team gets 5 handicap strokes, applied to the 5 hardest holes. On one of those par 3s you make a physical bogey (4) — the stroke brings it down to a net 3 (par) = 2 pts instead of 1. On the other 13 holes, scoring is standard Stableford.

Stableford Scoring

Every hole is worth points based on your team's score relative to par. The worse the hole, the less it costs you — that's the beauty of Stableford. Blow-ups cap at zero instead of wrecking your round.

Par on every hole = 36 points. Anything above that and your team is going low.

The Championship Format

16 teams qualify across two seasons. On championship day, it's single-elimination 2v2 match play — 4 back-to-back 9-hole rounds to crown a champion. FBGC covers all greens fees for qualifiers.

Qualify. Battle it out. Win the Championship.

FAQ

Yes — all players need to be current FBGC members. We use the FBGC app for scoring and leaderboard tracking, so every player needs an account. Membership also includes an official GHIN handicap and access to all FBGC events and competitions.

Yes — we encourage it! Register solo and we'll match you with a partner before the season starts. Some of the best teams we've seen started as strangers.

Tee times and matchups are assigned randomly each week. You'll get your tee time and opponent team ahead of Thursday so you know when to show up.

Yes — an official GHIN handicap is required to receive any strokes on the net leaderboard. Without one, you'll automatically play as a 0 handicap. The good news: a GHIN is included with Five Boroughs Golf Club membership, so joining gets you covered instantly.

We automatically drop your worst week's score from the 4-week season. Whether it was just a bad round or you and your partner had to miss a week, we built in a little forgiveness. Your top 3 weekly net Stableford totals count toward the season leaderboard.

The Gross leaderboard ranks teams by raw Stableford points — no handicap adjustments. It's a prestige race for the best scorers. The Net leaderboard adds your team handicap strokes to your gross total, leveling the playing field. Championship qualification is based on the Net leaderboard only, so every skill level has a fair shot.

Yes. FBGC covers all greens fees on championship day for the 16 qualifying teams (32 players). You earned your spot — you play for free.

If a Thursday is rained out, that week is treated as a bye for all teams. Since your worst week is already dropped (best 3 of 4), one rainout doesn't affect the standings. If multiple weeks are impacted, we'll communicate a makeup plan to all registered teams.

Absolutely. Fresh registration opens for each season, so you can play both Season 1 and Season 2 if you want. Teams that qualify from either season compete in the Spring Championship.

After each round, you enter your hole-by-hole team score in the FBGC web app on your phone. Your partner reviews and attests the scorecard. Stableford points are calculated automatically, and the leaderboard updates in real time. No paper scorecards, no math.
